For
most of us, this was the highlight of the trip. This was what we strained ourselves to
accomplish. This particular peak was unlike most others because this peak required some
serious effort to reach...not to mention that it was the HIGHEST peak in the lower 48
states!!! That made it all the sweeter!
Arriving at the summit is a whole
lot sweeter when you do it with friends! Our friendships all grew closer through this
common physical, mental, and even spiritual experience. We all encouraged each other and
celebrated each other's victories.
After all that work, you just gotta
sign your name in the official log book to prove that you really made it (especially if
you don't have a camera with you)!
These are pictures of either
handstands or folks holding the world up (depending on which way you view the picture)...
The summit "ledge" is a
strange vortex on the mountain. Most didn't venture to its edge. As you scoot out to the
edge of this seat and hang your feet down, there is nothing between your feet and the
valley floor below! It is WAY WAY down below. The "vortex" gives the strange
feeling that it's trying to pull you over the edge (notice the photo taken straight down
between the legs).
Several of us made phone calls
from the summit to our loved ones (requires cell phone capable of analog). For at least
three of us, the experience was emotional and involved getting surprisingly choked up
along with a tear or two.
The view from the summit is absolutely spectacular.
Pictures can describe it much better than words but only the 3-dimensional view in real
life (mixed with the sheer exhaustion that it required to see the view) can really explain
what it is all about.
